Portraits of Grace: Diana

Portraits of Grace is a snapshot into the lives of the people at King's Cross Church. As "kingdom minded, kingdom people," we recognize God's work in every detail of our lives. We invite you to meet the people of our church.

Sam and I had a very traumatic time at our first church, where I became a Christian. People were doubting the integrity of the pastor, who was a close friend to us. And it was very heartbreaking when it happened. There was a lot of mistrust. In the beginning we supported the pastor because we thought he was right. But we slowly realized that while there were aspects in which he was right, there were also aspects where his behavior was wrong.  His reaction to us in casting the doubts was wrong, and that was what hurt him more than whether he ‘did it or not’. It was how he reacted to us and how he fought against us. That broke a lot of relationships. A lot of people left the church. A lot of people left hurt. We left hurt.

Our friends who left fell into two categories. One group left the church entirely- because they were angry. They defined God by the people who loved God. So they distrusted God because of what happened. And then I saw others who were able to separate God and his people. They were able to flourish and continue to follow after God. I think that’s an important distinction that a Christian needs to make, because otherwise your faith is going to be damaged eventually. We as God’s people are still sinners. We make mistakes and we hurt each other- but the God that we love, the God that loves us, is perfect and is devoid of any sin. So the sin of his people should not be reflected upon God. I think people need to understand that so that they can continue to follow God.
